The Forêt Intérieure/Interior Forest is a drawing of a forest, a shared dream.
Based on an ongoing exchange with the iconic French author, poet, playwright and philosopher Hélène Cixous, Los Angeles-based artist Alexandra Grant’s multi-faceted project Forêt Intérieure/Interior Forest—encompassing a series of public drawing sessions, reading groups, artist collaborations and an installation at 18th Street Arts Center—focuses on Cixous’ book Philippines as a source for imagery, centering on the repeating thematic of the forest as a profound shared space. Drifting between a real and an imagined place, the forest becomes a site for communion with what Cixous terms “the perfect Other.”
“Visiting Trees” (Arbres d’Ailleurs) were produced by artists Frances Garreston, Channing Hansen, Bari Ziperstein, Annelie McKenzie and Tina Linville, which included this tree created from recycled hangers. Artists Lita Albuquerque, Renee Petropoulos, Steve Roden, Scoli Acosta, Alison O’Daniel, Florian Viel, Meital Yaniv, Chritine Beebe and Laura Pardini led drawing residencies within the project and over 200 participants—including DEHSART—contributed to the drawing and are named as collaborators.
DEHSART and Hinterculture have contributed to the fundraiser auction in support of the Forêt Intérieure/Interior Forest Wall of Trees with Joshua trees–one made from VHS tape, and one incorporating ash from the recent Powerhouse fire.
